A year on from their 2ser Feature Album of the Week, The Auburn Girl, Sydney’s Blood Blossoms return w/ their 3rd offering, 2003. The retention of Director and Concertmaster of The Sydney Lyric Orchestra, Adrian Keating on Strings and Bassist Ralph Marshall provide some familiar tones to their most previous album while the addition of Horns Multi-instrumentalist Michael Hawke and Keyboard maestro, Stuart Hunter add some fresh depth and texture to the band’s sound. While undoubtedly an ambitious and somewhat indulgent affair, the record manages to avoid the forced and isolationistic vibe that chains many “concept albums.” The record traverses a wide sonic landscape, sometimes floating in the clouds, sometimes scrounging in the gutter, sometimes both in the same song! The songs catalogue the month to month emotional state of a single year in the life of the author. Somewhat of an audio journal if you like. While the length of many of the songs will deny them rotation on most radio stations the album does contain some shorter and quite catchy numbers in “March,” “April” and “October,” the latter arguably the groups best song to date on what is easily their best record to date.
